Abstract

The goods and services produced within an economy are directly or indirectly associated with energy consumption, as well as, depending on the type of fuel, with the emission of greenhouse gases. Human activities, due to their contribution for the increase of those gases concentration, are regarded as the main source of climate changes. In this study an Input-Output methodology is applied in order to evaluate the nacional and regional impacts of the reduction of CO2 emissions in the Portuguese economic sectors. This approach allows for the estimation of carbon dioxide emissions related to final demand variations, considering different growth scenarios for the Portuguese economy. The results obtained indicate that the limits established by the Kyoto Protocol referring to 2010 will be exceeded.
