Heritage on the move: conditions and reasons of use of passenger rail service in south-central Chile (Biobío and Araucanía)

In the framework of railway studies, one of the most relevant aspects at a global level is related to its versatility as a transport device that is a priority in the public agenda and with certain heritage and tourist characteristics. This cultural potential of the railroad is extrapolated to the national reality and transforms it into an object of study in movement with a historical social tradition. Based on a quantitative, exploratory and non-experimental methodological approach (n=346), the present research aims to describe the motivations and conditions of railroad use in the non-metropolitan daily life of the central-south zone, considering the travel practices and railroad culture of users of the Talcahuano-Laja (n=146) and Victoria-Temuco (n=200) passenger services. Among the results, there is a mostly positive evaluation in terms of comfort, efficiency, economy and rootedness in the social memory of the territories, however, there are critical nodes in terms of coverage and demand in small cities and towns in both regions. It is concluded that the railroad transcends its functionality as a means of transportation to become a fundamental element in the local identity of the surveyed areas.
