Although several perceptions and attitudes of residents towards tourism impacts are widely studied, the same is not true regarding the appropriation of public space and the strategies that can be adopted to minimize the negative impacts of this appropriation. This paper intends to respond to this research gap, by analyzing the opinion of residents regarding the strategies that should be adopted and whether it varies according to both their perceptions of the appropriation of public space by visitors and their attitudes towards visitors. To answer this objective, a questionnaire survey (N = 301) was conducted with residents of the city of Aveiro, located in the Central Region of Portugal. The results show that the degree of agreement of residents regarding the strategies is related both to their perception of the appropriation of public spaces and to their attitudes towards visitors. The perception of negative appropriation of spaces tends to generate a preference for strategies to exclude visitors. Positive perceptions, on the other hand, tend to generate greater agreement with strategies of inclusion and support for visitors. At the end, guidelines are presented for the design of tourism development policies and strategies that promote a better use of public space.
