Abstract

The individual's perceptions regarding the urban environment in which they live are influenced by several factors, and there is an increasing effort to understand what they are and how they affect satisfaction. Therefore, neighborhoods and cities must be designed to meet the needs of individuals who live in that environment. However, there is little understanding of the differences between individuals’ perceptions when considering the housing location, concerning the existence of certain factors in the neighborhoods. Thus, this study explores the differences in perceptions between individuals who live in or near downtown and those who live in neighborhoods or more remote regions. A sample of 426 respondents from the South, Southeast and Midwest regions of the country was collected through a questionnaire that used the 5-point Likert scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate analyses. The results revealed which aspects are more significant in different regions of the cities. Among the three constructs studied, the factors that stood out were good schools, public transport and isolated neighborhoods.
