Having in mind the requisites for assessing potential candidates to a competitive position in the regional and urban economics scientific area, for example, applicants to promotion or funding, in this article we identify and classify international circulation journals specialized in this scientific area, which are in the bibliographical database ISI Web of Knowledge. Taking into account that the classification based on such quantitative data only covers outstanding journals, we propose a qualitative classification for journals that are not covered in this database. We conclude that there are no class A journals specialized in this scientific area and that, in comparative terms, the specialized top journals are class B+ having, on average, an impact 3 times smaller than the top generalist journals that also publish articles in this scientific area such as the American Economic Review, the Econometrica and the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics.
