It is generally accepted that informal contacts are enhanced by geographical proximity. Proximity induces the exchange of ideas and information, thus, the creation of new knowledge. Literature suggests that information and knowledge, thus innovation, remain territorial circumscribed. The importance of the territorial dimension in innovation processes leads to a different approach to territorial competitiveness. Therefore, different levels of territorial competitive performance are measured by the capacity to attract and settle information and knowledge. This paper acknowledges the importance of a cluster based approach in promoting regional competitiveness. For this purpose, the paper will focus on the study of a potential regional Portuguese economy, namely Region of Porto competitiveness. The economic analysis of the region identifies the fashion cluster as a strong regional economic potential.
