The study dealt with the mapping of the urbanized areas in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC) and its comparison with the pertinent legislation in order to diagnose the situation of adequacy before the needs of urban planning and management. The comparison of the mapped boundaries, carried out with support of geotechnologies, shows a worrying reality in most of the municipalities of the MRC, are observed situations in which the urbanized areas extraplore the legal limits of the urban perimeter without there is an effective necessity for this, as well as, others where the legal limit of the official urban perimeter is located far beyond the actual density of occupation of the territory and the need for urbanization that the municipality presents. The general situation is lack of control and monitoring of urban growth in front of regulatory legislation, demonstrating the strength of hegemonic agents in the urban space production process interested in the speculative growth of these areas.
