Understanding the organisation of metropolises increasingly involves considering a metropolitan area as something that does not end in a central agglomeration, but rather extends over other more peripheral and functionally integrated areas. This article attempts to identify the changes in the organisation of the Lisbon and Oporto metropolitan systems by describing the main (dis)similarities between them, and takes as a starting point areas of analysis which go beyond the administrative limits of both the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and the Oporto Metropolitan Area. By focusing on recent changes in the patterns of distribution of the population and employment and on the structure of home/work daily commuting, the analysis shows that the two metropolitan systems have become more complex, with Lisbon showing that it has reached a greater maturity than Oporto.
