Immigration had an important impact on the population dynamics in most of the Portuguese regions in the nineties. Correlation and clusters analyses showed that in inner regions of the North and Centre and in Baixo and Alto Alentejo, the positive role of immigration in population growth was overshadowed by its role in aggravating ageing. In the coastal regions of the North and Centre and in the Península de Setúbal, the influence of immigration on population dynamics was as important as of natural growth and/or internal migration, while in Grande Lisboa, Algarve, Alentejo Central and Alentejo Litoral immigration was by far the most important factor. Immigrants born in Portugal and Western Europe predominated in the North and Centre while those born in former African Portuguese colonies and in Brazil were concentrated in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Immigrants born in Eastern Europe were the most numerous in Alentejo and Algarve.
