The aim of this study is to analyze how investments in social assistance relate to suicide rates per 100,000 inhabitants, using the dynamic panel data methodology based on data extracted from the Minas Gerais Social Responsibility Index for the state of Minas Gerais between 2002 and 2017. This state is the second most populous in Brazil and has the third largest share of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The results suggest that an increase in these investments leads to a reduction in suicide rates. In addition, there was a persistent and discreet rise in suicide rates between 2002-2014, when there was a very significant increase, corroborating the literature that economic crises are catalysts for this behavior. Finally, it can be concluded that welfare policies are important mechanisms for protecting individuals from variations in income levels over time, and are an effective way of preventing suicides, especially when there are adverse economic effects.
