Abstract

The objective of this study is to elaborate and verify the application of a methodology for the definition of spatial units of municipal analysis, and for the selection of municipalities in the influence area, starting from the premise of three spatial scales of analysis: within the region, between regions and external to the region. Its relevance lies in equating an empirical problem, commonly faced by planners who treat mediumsized Brazilian municipalities. The urban and regional transport planning system requires administrative units or a zoning proposal, usually defined in master plans, which are not always available. The results consist of the delimitation and characterization of each one of the spatial units applied in the municipality of Petropolis located in the State of Rio de Janeiro. It stands out its feasibility of application, also for other municipalities with undefined quarters.
